This is the introduction to sparring and the first type of sparring a Tae Kwon Do student does as a yellow tag (9th Kup). The benefits of three step sparring include:
· Facing an opponent.
· Development of distance for blocks and counter attacks.
· Learning basic targets.
· Improving timing.
A Student learns 3 set sparring techniques for each exam 9th Kup to 7th Kup.
Starting Position is the attacker in a Left Walking Stance Low Block and the defender in Parallel Ready Stance.
ATTACK = always three middle section obverse punches in walking stance.
DEFENCE = as below

1. Defence: Right leg back walking stance, middle inner forearm block to the inside three times.
Counter: Middle reverse punch (right hand) Target: solar plexus

2. Defence: Left leg back ‘L’ stance, middle inner forearm block to the outside three times.
Counter: Move back (left) foot forward at 458, then shift front foot to outside of attackers leg whilst performing a right knife-hand side strike in ‘L’ stance Target: neck/base of skull (NB: if the attacker is significantly taller then the kidney area should be chosen for the target)

3. Defence: Left leg back ‘L’ stance, middle inward outer forearm block to the inside three times.
Counter: Front/Side Back fist (right hand) Target: Bridge of nose/temple.

4. Defence: Left leg back ‘L’ stance middle outer forearm block to the outside two times. On third block slip front (left) foot to outside of attackers leg performing sitting stance 458 to attacker
Counter: Demonstrate a slow left measure punch then fast double middle punch. Target: Floating ribs.

5. Defence: Right leg back ‘L’ stance, middle outer forearm block to the inside two times. On third block slip front (right) foot out to form a sitting stance 458 to attacker.
Counter: Execute a right high front punch (simultaneously with the third block). Target: Point of chin.

6. Defence: Right leg back ‘L’ stance, middle outwards knife-hand block to the inside two times. On third block slip front (right) foot out to form a sitting stance 458 to attacker.
Counter: Execute a right high inwards knife-hand strike (simultaneously with the third block). Target: Side of neck.

7. Defence: Right leg back ‘L’ stance, middle outwards knifehand block to the inside two times. third move slide back at 45 degree angle to the right, forming ‘L’ stance whilst executing middle knifehand -guarding block.
Counter: Right front snap kick, high section double (obverse then reverse) punch in walking stance.
Target: Kick: solar plexus / Punches: point of chin.

8. Defence: Left leg back ‘L’ stance, palm heel block to the inside two times. Third move slide back at 458 angle to the right forming ‘L’ stance, executing middle forearm-guarding block.
Counter : Left (back leg) middle or high section side piercing kick, left high section knife-hand side strike in ‘L’ stance.
Target: Kick: solar plexus or face / Strike: temple.

9. Defence: Right leg back ‘L’ stance, middle inwards palm block to the outside twice. Third move slide right leg back at 458 angle to the left forming ‘L’ stance, middle forearm-guarding block.
Counter : Middle section right (back leg) turning kick, high section knife-hand side strike in vertical stance.
Target: Kick: solar plexus / Strike: neck or base of skull.
